Preventing Heat Loss Through Walls
Preventing Heat Loss Through Walls
I want to show you some tips on preventing heat loss through walls. With domestic energy prices on the rise, we want to help everyone maximize the energy we are paying for.
You may be shocked to know that approximately 25% of the heat generated by your boiler will escape through your home’s roof. Without adequate insulation 10% of the heat, you’re paying for will dissipate through the floor. Additionally, a further 35% were through cracks in and around window and door frames.
This is less of a problem during the summer months, however during the cold winter months when it’s more important to keep your home warm and toasty. You need to take every precaution to protect the heat you’re paying for. You can’t let it escape through poor insulation or cracks around windows and door frames.
This can all sound a little scary and costly, but you can make lots of minor changes to your house to make it more energy efficient. Adding insulation, modernizing the structure, or retrofitting.
Draughts affecting your heat retention?
Draught proofing is highly recommended by the Energy Saving Trust. Also, Any breaches in the insulation of your home that allow warm air to escape should be sealed up. You do have to be cautious in places that require sufficient ventilation. Consequently Conserving warm air will mean you use less electricity to heat your home therefore keeping your house warm and cozy. Without the warm air escaping you’ll also be able to set your thermostat at a lower temperature and reduce your energy usage even further.
Here are some typical places to locate draughts and tips for resolving them:
- Windows
- Doors
- Chimneys
- Floorboards and skirting boards
- Loft/loft hatches
- Cracks in the walls

Firstly Sealing any cracks around window and door frames will help prevent cold air from entering your house. Additionally, any cracks in the walls should be filled. These are easy and cheap fixes you can do yourself. Another tip is to install a chimney balloon which is a great investment and helps block any cold air from getting into the house. The insulation works by reflecting the heat away from the wall and back into the house room. Also insulating behind the radiators can significantly lower energy bills by setting your thermostat at a lower temperature because the heat is being retained within your home.
To install the Radiator Insulation Kit ensure you either remove the radiator off the wall or turn the radiator off. Most modern homes have radiators that are easy to lift off because they have flexible rubber piping.
The next step is to determine exactly where the heat-reflecting foil should be placed on the radiator that’s being insulated. keep in mind if you don’t want to see the foil don’t place it on the edges.
