EcoQuilt Expert for Conservatories
How to insulate your Home By Fitting Eco-Quilt
How To Install EcoQuilt Expert on Roofs and Walls
-
Measure Area and Cut EcoQuilt
Begin by rolling out and cutting the insulation to size. EcoQuilt can be installed either horizontally or vertically Cut EcoQuilt Expert either using Multifoil Scissors or a Cutting Knife
-
Staple Insulation to Timber
To gain the best thermal benefits, a cavity either side of the insulation is required. Staple EcoQuilt directly on to timbers (Rafters, Studs, Battens) at 300mm intervals Tip - It is helpful for an additional person to be holding the insulation, whilst the other staples
-
Tape and Seal EcoQuilt
EcoQuilt Expert is to be overlapped by a min 50mm, over all overlaps. Ensure these are fully taped and sealed using Thermaseal Foil Joining Tape. Once EcoQuilt is fully taped and sealed, the product will work as a high performance Vapour Control Layer, reducing condensation. Ensure EcoQuilt is also taped and sealed around the perimeter.
-
Counter Batten & Plasterboard
Finish the installation by installing by screwing 25mm battens over the insulation. Battens are usually spaced between 400mm and 600mm centres. Then install your internal finish over the battens.
How to Insulate Your Loft Floor Without Using Fibreglass
-
Remove Existing Fibreglass / Wool Insulation
Removing the existing loft insulation, such as wool / fibreglass. We would advise that you use a mask and protective clothing to avoid irritating your skin. Also try to remove any dirt, just to make a the taping step (layer) a little easier.
-
Start the Install
Measure the first length, you can insulate either horizontally or vertically - whatever is best. When you have measured the first length - cut the EcoQuilt so it is manageable and roll it over the joists. You can cut the EcoQuilt Expert Provided by using either our mulitoil scissors or a cutting knife - Both are available in our Multifoil Fitting Kit. When you run your next strip, just ensure that you have overlapped the insulation material by 50mm.
-
Air Cavity Required
You need an air cavity either side of our product, the optimimum is 25mm. If you are not boarding over the insulation, you can simply just staple directly on to the joists. This way you will have a cavity either side. If you are boarding the loft floor, post insulation. You will need to recess the EcoQuilt so that you are stapling the insulation on to the side of the joists. This will provide you with an air gap behind the board. If your joists are only shallow, you will need to install a batten on your insulation before boarding to create the cavity.
-
Staple
Staple the Insulation, at 300mm intervals. We do supply the Staple Gun Kit, which includes 5,000 of our 14mm staples - this is included in our Loft Floor Insulation Kit as standard.
-
Taping & Sealing
Now you just need to seal around all of the edges and joints, to make sure that you have created a vapour control layer. This prevents any cold air entering and helps to keep an ambient internal temperature.
-
Installing Loft Board
Once 1 Layer of EcoQuilt is installed and tape, and you have created an air gap either by recessing or installing battens, you are ready for the installation of loft boards (if you wish to board). These can be screwed directly into the joists.
How to Insulate Under Rafter
-
Cut the Material Required
Measure the amount of material required for your first strip and cut. It is most common for customers to insulate horizontally, but the choice is yours.
-
Staple the Multifoil in to Place
Staple the Multifoil to the underside of the Roof Rafters. We advise stapling every 300mm to ensure that the material is held securely in to place. Pull the material nice and straight where possible, to keep it neat and also to make the cutting process easier for you too.
-
Install your Second Layer...
When installing your second layer, overlap the material on to the former layer by 50mm. Continue insulating until you have full coverage, following the above instructions.
-
Finish as you please!
You may wish to leave the insulation exposed - which is fine. However, it is quite common for customers to nail / screw battens into place before boarding - if they are wanting to create a usable room. This is not required but is popular option.
-
If you would like to double the performance, you can!
You can double the performance by installing two layers. To save on space, you recess the first layer to the side of the roof rafter. This way you still have an air cavity behind the product, but you also have an air cavity between the first and the second layer too.
-
Staple next Layers
Continue installing your first layer, until you have full coverage.
How to Insulate Your Conservatory
-
Installing ThermaFrost (Glass Only)
If the Conservatory Roof has a glass roof, we recommend the use of ThermaFrost Window Tint. The material will create a white opaque finish which will add privacy and also reduce sun glare. To view full installation details of this product, please visit the data sheet on the product page.
-
Install Timber Battens
Install 25mm deep battens onto the UPVC beams. These are screwed onto the beams using the 50mm FastFix Conservatory Screws found in the Conservatory Kit.
-
Staple Multifoil Insulation
Next, staple either SuperQuilt or EcoQuilt Expert directly onto the battens at 300mm intervals. You will receive a Heavy Duty Staple Gun & 5,000 14mm staples in the Conservatory Insulation Kit.
-
Taping & Sealing Multifoil
Ensure all Insulation joints are overlapped by a minimum of 50mm. Ensure overlaps are fully taped and sealed using Thermaseal Foil Joining Tape. This will ensure the product acts as a high performing vapour control layer, eliminating the risk of condensation. SuperQuilt & EcoQuilt can be easily cut using Multifoil Scissors or a Cutting Knife - Both available in our Multifoil Fitting Kit.
-
Installing Counter Battens
Once the Insulation products are fully taped, sealed and overlapped, proceed with installing 25mm deep counter battens. Ensure battens are also installed around the perimeter for your internal boarding.
-
Install Internal Boarding / More Commonly ConservaClad (uPVC Cladding)
To finish, either Plasterboard or ConservaClad (uPVC Plastic Cladding) can be installed as the internal layer. ConservaClad is the most popular internal finish in conservatories! If plaster boarding, plasterboard is then screwed into the battens in the usual manner. We would recommend using a 9mm Plasterboard as this will keep the weight down.
-
Enjoy your new Conservatory!
Enjoy your revived Conservatory all year round! The conservatory will keep cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter, and also significantly reduce rain noise.

Do I need to use battens with this product?
To gain the best thermal benefits, it is essential to have air-gaps both sides of the insulation. This allows EcoQuilt to expand and reflect on both sides. These cavities can be created by battens, or existing timbers e.g. Rafters or Studwork.
Can I use this product to insulate my loft?
Yes, EcoQuilt Expert is suitable for insulating either the sloping rafters, or loft floor level.
Do I need to use a foiled-back plasterboard?
When EcoQuilt Expert is the most internal insulation layer, it will work as a high-performance Vapour Control Layer, reducing condensation. If this method is followed, there is no requirement for a Foiled-backed plasterboard.
How much heat would you save?
This would vary on the application; however a good benchmark is 1 layer of EcoQuilt Expert would equate to approx 100mm Mineral Wool.
Is EcoQuilt waterproof?
When EcoQuilt is taped and sealed, it does not allow any moisture to pass through.
Can you recycle EcoQuilt?
Whilst EcoQuilt is not available for recycling, it is made of approx 75% recycled materials. EcoQuilt also will not shrink or degrade over time, and will last the lifetime of the application!
What’s the best method to cut EcoQuilt?
We recommend cutting EcoQuilt either with Multifoil Scissors or a cutting knife. Both are found in our Multifoil Insulation Fitting Kit.
